The first study on the therapeutic effects of CBD was conducted in Brazil with the aim of helping people with MS. (MS), where inflammation was thought to be a factor in the disorder. Researchers found that CBD reduced the number of inflammatory cells and the glial cells (neutrophil cells). Further studies have revealed that CBD has significant anti-inflammatory properties when taken in the absence of other drugs. CBD has been shown to decrease inflammation in patients suffering from multiple sclerosis.
There have been preliminary studies regarding the effect of CBD on blood pressure levels that are high however, they weren’t conclusive. CBD was not found to be effective in hypertension treatment. Some researchers believe that high blood pressure can be treated by reducing the body weight of the patient by exercising and diet, while others think that CBD could have negative effects on the cardiovascular system. CBD’s effects on hypertension and other cardiac issues will require further research.
One study that looked at Parkinson’s disease patients found that CBD significantly reduced the chance of sudden death. The CBD was administered intravenously and the results showed that CBD significantly reduced the risk of dying. This is an encouraging result and has great potential as an antiparkinsonian medication. However, more studies must be conducted to confirm these findings.
One of the most well-known applications for CBD is to treat pain. Studies on animals have proven that CBD can ease pain without increasing the dosage or frequency. One study found that CBD was administered to animals after they were given pentobarbital which is a fatal dose barbiturates. After only one day of CBD administration, all of the animals did not show any signs or symptoms of discomfort or pain. Similar to that, CBD has been administered to patients suffering from testicular cancer who suffer from impotence and did not alter the testosterone levels in the body, which is the chemical responsible for sexual function.
Apart from alleviating the suffering of humans, CBD has been shown to improve the quality of life of people suffering from certain conditions. For instance in a research study by the University of Illinois’ College of Medicine CBD was found to have an effect that was positive for those who suffer from chronic pain. CBD users reported better level of quality of life than patients who received placebos. Other researchers found similar results. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Disease as well as the National Institutes of Health, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have backed the study.
Depression and anxiety are two other areas in which CBD has been studied. Two animal studies have shown that CBD can help reduce depression and anxiety symptoms. In one study, mice were given doses of CBD that were half as large as the doses found in a clinical study using Sativex, an anti-anxiety medicine. The mice showed better locomotion and showed lower grooming times than control animals.
